Here are some of the more common items that people use to decorate their CBGs:
- Sound Hole Inserts – many builders like to dress up the sound holes that they drill into the face of the cigar box. The most common items used for this are metal grommets, which come in various sizes and finishes. Adding grommets to your sound holes can really dress up the build, hide small tears in the paper, and hide the rough edges of the drill holes. The most commonly available size/finish tends to be brass in a size of around 1/2″, but many others are available. C. B. Gitty Crafter Supply, for instance, carries an ever-expanding range of metal sound-hole grommets, from 1/4″ to a jumbo 2″ inside diameter, and with finishes including brass, antique brass, copper, matte silver, painted black and more!
- Box Corners – Metal box corners are another great way to spruce up your build. Most commonly available in brass, but also in many other metal finishes and a range of sizes, metal box corners serve a dual purpose: they protect the corners of your boxes from damage, and also add a distinctive look.
- Hinges and Latches – Sometimes you may want to replace the fairly chintzy hinges and latches that come on most cigar boxes with sturdier, or just more decorative, models. With some minor modifications, hinges can also be put into use as tailpieces on CBGs. There is a wide range of these items available from hardware stores and craft supply houses.
- Other – This category includes a huge range of other items that can be used to decorate your CBGs… from vintage coins to semiprecious gemstones to random recycled metal pieces to glass beads, feathers… many builders find that once they get into CBGs, they are always looking at familiar objects in new ways, thinking of how they could be incorporated into a build. A trip to an antique store, a second-hand, thrift or junk store can be a treasure trove of usable “found” objects. Keep your eyes and mind open, and there’s no telling what you will find!
